Plan Your Seams and Layout Before You Approve the Slab

A slab is a raw material; your countertop is a layout. The gap between those two things is where great fabricators earn their money and where cheap ones create regrets.

Seams are inevitable in most kitchens. Any run longer than about 10 feet, most L-shaped configurations, and virtually every large island will need at least one. The question is never “can we avoid seams” but “where do we put them.” Good seam placement principles:

  • Put seams where the eye does not naturally rest — behind a faucet, at an inside corner, near a wall termination rather than mid-field.

  • Never run a seam through a sink cutout or a cooktop cutout if it can be avoided. Those are the highest-stress zones in the whole top.

  • On a veined stone, the veining should flow through the seam. This is called vein matching, and it is the difference between a seam you notice and one you have to hunt for. It costs material yield — sometimes an extra slab — and it is worth asking whether your quote includes it.

  • Ask to see a digital layout. A shop with a CNC and digital templating can show you exactly where every piece falls on the actual photographed slab, before a single cut. If your fabricator cannot produce this, you are approving a layout on faith.

Think about what will be covered. This is the most common regret we hear. A homeowner picks a slab for one gorgeous concentration of movement — and in the finished kitchen that area sits under the range, behind the sink, or inside the cabinet run. Before approving, get a rough sense of where your sink, cooktop, and any appliance cutouts land on the slab. Then move the dramatic zone to where you will actually see it: the island field, the visible run under a window, the waterfall panel.

Consider your edge at selection time. The edge profile changes how the stone reads. A thick mitered edge shows a lot of the pattern in cross-section and makes a slab feel monumental. A simple eased edge on 3cm reads clean and modern. On a heavily veined marble-look stone, a busy decorative edge like an ogee can fight the pattern. Look at edge samples in the same material family before deciding.

Finish changes the stone as much as the pattern does. Polished maximizes depth, color saturation, and stain resistance, and shows fingerprints and water spots more. Honed reads soft and matte, hides fingerprints beautifully, and on darker stones can show oils more readily. Leathered adds low-sheen texture that is excellent at hiding everything and is a favorite for busy Portland family kitchens. The same slab in three finishes looks like three different materials — always ask to see finish samples in the stone you are considering, not a generic finish board.

Questions to Ask, and Red Flags to Walk Away From

By the time you approve a slab you should have clear answers to all of these. If a shop is vague on any of them, that vagueness usually shows up later as a change order.

Ask about the stone

  • What is this material technically — granite, quartzite, marble, dolomitic marble, or engineered quartz? (Soft “quartzite” that is actually marble is a real and common mislabel, and it etches with lemon juice. Ask for an acid test on an offcut if you are unsure.)

  • What lot is it from, how many slabs remain, and will my slabs be tagged and held?

  • Does it need sealing, and how often in our climate?

  • Is there mesh backing or significant resin fill, and where?

Ask about the quote

  • Is this all-inclusive — templating, fabrication, edge profile, all cutouts, delivery, and installation?

  • What edge profile is included, and what does an upgrade cost per linear foot?

  • Are sink and cooktop cutouts included? Is the sink itself included?

  • Is plumbing disconnect and reconnect included? Old countertop removal and disposal?

  • Is vein matching across seams included, and will you show me the digital layout before cutting?

  • Who is liable if a slab breaks in fabrication or transit?

Ask about the company

  • Are you licensed and insured in Oregon, and what is your CCB number?

  • Do you fabricate in-house or subcontract it out?

  • What is your warranty on fabrication and installation, separate from the material warranty?

  • What is the realistic timeline from template to install?

Red flags

  • “Starting at” pricing with no written all-inclusive number. The gap between the teaser price and the final invoice is where the margin hides.

  • Refusing to name the lot or hold your slabs. This almost always means substitution is planned.

  • No digital layout, no template visit, or a quote produced entirely from your own measurements. Every real installation is templated on site.

  • Pressure to decide today because “this slab won’t last.” Sometimes true, usually a close.

  • No Oregon CCB license number. You can verify any contractor instantly on the Oregon CCB website. Do it.

  • A bid dramatically below every other bid. In fabrication, that gap is made up somewhere — thinner material, no vein matching, seams placed for yield instead of appearance, or corners cut on support and installation.
