They are stunning, they are expensive, and they require sealing and gentler maintenance than an engineered surface.
The honest trade-offs. Integrated basins cost significantly more than any other option — often several thousand dollars — because they are labor-intensive fabrication rather than a purchased fixture. Repair is also harder: a chipped stainless sink gets replaced in an afternoon, while damage to an integrated basin is a fabrication job. And material matters enormously. Quartz and porcelain handle integrated basins well. Natural marble and limestone in a busy kitchen sink will etch from lemon juice, wine, and coffee within the first year — we will tell you that honestly before you spend the money, even though it is the more expensive option we would otherwise be selling you.
Best for: bathroom vanities and powder rooms, contemporary designs where visual continuity is the priority, commercial and hospitality projects, and homeowners for whom the seamless look is worth a genuine premium.
Faucet Holes, Accessories, and the Details That Get Forgotten
The sink is the big decision, but the small drilling decisions get made at templating and cannot be undone. Here is the checklist we walk Portland homeowners through before a template appointment.
Count your holes before templating. Every fixture that penetrates the stone needs its own hole, drilled during fabrication. A typical modern kitchen needs more than people expect: main faucet (one hole for a single-lever pull-down, three for a widespread), soap dispenser, filtered water tap, air switch for the garbage disposal, and increasingly an instant-hot water dispenser. That is potentially five holes. Adding one later means bringing a wet core drill into your finished kitchen — possible, but messy and risky. Decide now.
Check the faucet's reach against your basin. A common and irritating mistake is a faucet whose spout does not reach far enough over the basin, so water hits the back wall of the sink instead of the center of the drain. Compare the faucet's spout reach spec to the distance from the hole location to the basin center. Take thirty seconds to do this and you will avoid years of annoyance.
Confirm the deck thickness your faucet accepts. Most faucets ship with mounting hardware rated for a certain maximum deck thickness. A 3cm slab plus a built-up mitered edge can exceed it. Check the spec, and if you are doing a thick mitered edge at the sink run, tell your fabricator so we can mill the underside for clearance.
Sink grids and bottom protection. A stainless bottom grid is inexpensive insurance for both the sink and the countertop edge, and it is the accessory people most often skip and later wish they had.
Workstation sinks. Sinks with integrated ledges for cutting boards and drying racks have become genuinely popular over the last few years, and for good reason in smaller Portland kitchens where counter space is scarce. They template like any other undermount, but their interior dimensions differ from standard basins, so give your fabricator the exact model number rather than nominal size.
Reinforcement and support. Ask your fabricator directly what support they are providing at the sink cutout. The cutout is the weakest point in the entire countertop and the single most likely place for a failure. A good answer involves radiused corners, rodding or a support rail, and adequate substrate. A vague answer is a warning sign.
Sealing and maintenance around the sink. Natural stone around a sink sees more water than anywhere else in the kitchen. If you have granite, quartzite, marble, or soapstone, the sink perimeter is the area to re-seal most attentively — annually is a reasonable cadence in the Willamette Valley, where humidity keeps moisture in play year-round. Engineered quartz needs no sealing, but the silicone caulk joint still needs periodic attention regardless of material.
