Stone slabs come in finite sizes. A typical granite or quartzite slab runs roughly 120" to 130" long by 65" to 78" tall. Quartz is more standardized, usually around 126" x 63", with jumbo formats reaching about 130" x 65". Large-format porcelain can hit 126" x 63" as well, occasionally larger.
Now measure your kitchen. A very ordinary Portland galley or L-shaped kitchen has a run of counter that exceeds 130 inches. The moment your continuous run is longer than the slab, you have a seam. That is not a shortcut and it is not a quality problem — it is arithmetic.
There are three other reasons a seam appears even when the run would technically fit:
Access. A single piece of 3cm quartz measuring 10 feet by 26 inches weighs roughly 400 pounds and cannot flex. If it will not physically turn the corner into your kitchen, go up your staircase, or clear a doorway, it has to be cut. Older Portland homes — the 1920s bungalows and four-squares in Sellwood, Alberta, Laurelhurst, and Hawthorne — generate seams for this reason all the time. Narrow halls, tight door swings, and staircases with landings simply do not admit a full slab.

So when a company advertises a "seamless" kitchen, ask what they mean. Sometimes they mean a genuinely single-slab layout, which is achievable in smaller kitchens and on most islands. More often they mean "our seams look good," which is a fine claim but a different one. An honest fabricator tells you the seam count at the estimate, not on installation day.

Busy, small-scale granite patterns hide seams beautifully. The visual noise of the speckling breaks up the joint line. Darker granites with tight grain are especially forgiving.
Seams acceptably: veined quartz, with bookmatching or vein-matching
Marble-look quartz with dramatic veining can be seamed well, but it requires deliberate vein matching — the fabricator lays out the two pieces so the veins continue across the joint. This costs material yield, because you cannot nest the cuts as tightly. It is worth it. A veined quartz seam with veins running straight through looks intentional; the same seam with veins hitting the joint at different angles looks like a mistake.
Hardest to hide: dramatic natural quartzite, marble, and exotic stone
Big sweeping natural veining is inherently unmatchable across a seam, because the stone did not grow in a repeating pattern. You can align the general direction and get close, and a skilled fabricator gets remarkably close, but a bold quartzite or Calacatta marble seam will be findable if someone looks for it. That is the trade for having a genuinely unique surface. Most homeowners who choose these materials accept it happily — but they should be told, not surprised.
The special case: mitered edges and waterfall joints
Thick mitered edges and waterfall island legs create a corner joint that is a seam by any definition, and on veined material a well-mitered waterfall with the vein continuing over the edge and down the leg is one of the most impressive things in stonework. It is also unforgiving. If the miter is off by a hair, the corner shows a light line. This is skilled fabrication and it deserves a fabricator who does it regularly.

Good seam locations
Behind or beside a sink, at the sink centerline. A seam that runs through the middle of a sink cutout is a classic move. The sink interrupts the visual line anyway, the run is short, and the seam is largely hidden by the faucet deck and whatever lives around the sink. Note the nuance: the seam should cross at the sink, ideally splitting the cutout, not land two inches to the side of it where it reads as a stray line.
At an inside corner. The change of direction already breaks the eye. A seam tucked at the corner disappears into the geometry.
Under a cooktop or in a low-traffic dead zone. Same logic as the sink — use the appliance to camouflage the joint.
Along a cabinet division line. Aligning the seam with the vertical gap between two cabinet doors below gives the eye a reason to accept the line.
Bad seam locations
Dead center of the island. The island is the piece everyone looks at, leans on, and photographs. A seam across the middle of an island is the most regretted placement in the business. Most islands fit within a single slab; if yours does not, discuss the layout carefully before cutting, and consider whether a slightly different island size or a jumbo slab solves it.
Mid-run in open sight lines. A seam floating in the middle of a long uninterrupted counter with nothing around it to break the eye will always be visible, no matter how well it is executed.
Through a narrow strip. A seam placed where the countertop necks down — for example beside a range where the counter is only 12 inches deep — concentrates stress in a weak section. Structurally poor and visually obvious.
Right at an overhang or unsupported cantilever. Seams need support beneath them. A seam at the edge of a breakfast bar overhang is asking for a failure.
This is why templating matters. A digital template of your actual cabinets, followed by a slab layout you can review, is the difference between a seam you chose and a seam that happened to you. Check the color of the fill. The epoxy should be custom-tinted on site to match the stone at that exact spot, including the flecks. A gray seam line in a white counter, or a white seam line in a dark counter, is a fabricator who did not bother mixing. Good crews mix pigments and test on scrap before committing.
Look for excess epoxy on the surface. After curing, the joint should be scraped and polished flush so the seam does not have a dull, hazy stripe alongside it. A properly finished seam has the same sheen as the rest of the counter.
Confirm support underneath. There should be full plywood or cabinet-rail support beneath the joint, and on longer runs a seam setter is used during installation to pull the two pieces into tight vacuum-clamped alignment while the epoxy sets. If the crew is muscling pieces together by hand on a long joint, expect a wider seam.
One realistic expectation to set: a seam is a joint between two pieces of stone, not a weld. Under raking light — low winter sun coming through a Portland kitchen window at a shallow angle, or an undercabinet LED strip washing across the surface — even an excellent seam may show faintly.
