Second, panel height, because anything over about 48 inches tall becomes a two-person-plus-equipment lift with real breakage risk. Third, whether the wall is straight and plumb. Bookmatching uses two sequential slabs from the same block, one flipped, so the veining mirrors across a central seam like an open book. This creates the dramatic symmetrical butterfly effect you see in hotel lobbies and high-end fireplace surrounds.

Requirements are stricter:

  • You need two consecutive slabs from the same bundle — not just the same stone name, the same block, cut in sequence

  • One slab is installed “wrong side up,” which means both faces must be polished, or the yard must be willing to polish the second face

It also comes in 126" x 63" sheets in 6mm and 12mm thickness, so a full ceiling-height panel is often achievable in one piece, and the lighter weight makes big vertical installs far safer. The trade-off is that the pattern is printed on the surface, so exposed edges need mitering, and dramatic three-dimensional depth is limited.

Engineered quartz — excellent everywhere except directly behind a gas range

Quartz is non-porous, consistent, and available in beautiful marble-look patterns with real veining depth. It is our go-to for full-height backsplashes on prep walls, bar walls, and vanity walls. The one real caution: quartz contains polymer resin, and sustained direct high heat can scorch or yellow it. Behind a professional gas range with high BTU burners and no adequate clearance, quartz is the wrong call. Most manufacturers specify a minimum clearance behind cooking surfaces — follow it, or use porcelain in that zone.

Quartzite — the best-looking option, with real vertical advantages

Natural quartzite is extremely hard, heat-tolerant, and has the dramatic geological movement that makes feature walls worth doing at all. Vertically it has a hidden benefit: because the surface never gets standing water or acidic spills the way a counter does, the etching and sealing concerns that worry people about natural stone largely evaporate. A quartzite feature wall is close to maintenance-free.

Marble — beautiful, and defensible on a wall

This is also the strongest argument for 6mm or 12mm porcelain on tall installs: roughly a third of the weight, dramatically lower risk, and far less structural preparation.

Outlets, switches, and the code question

Oregon follows the National Electrical Code, which requires receptacles along kitchen counters at specified intervals. You cannot simply eliminate outlets to get a clean stone field. What you can do:

  • Move receptacles under the upper cabinets using under-cabinet outlet strips or puck outlets — the most common solution, and it leaves the stone completely uninterrupted

  • Integrate outlets into the side of the island or a pop-up where layout allows

  • Use horizontal-orientation receptacles with stone-matched or clear plates so the interruption is minimal

Every one of these is an electrical decision that must be made before the wall is closed up and before the stone is templated. Have that conversation with your electrician and your fabricator in the same week.

Sequencing — the order that actually works

  1. Cabinets set, level, and secured

  2. Electrical rough-in finalized, including any outlet relocations

  3. Wall blocking or substrate installed where required

  4. Drywall finished, walls checked for plumb and flatness

  5. Digital template of both counters and backsplash walls in one visit

  6. Layout approved on photos of your actual slabs, seams and vein match confirmed in writing

  7. Fabrication

  8. Counters installed, then backsplash panels installed and joints tooled

  9. Range and hood set last

Two field notes from our installers. First, if you are keeping existing cabinets, understand that removing an old tile backsplash almost always damages drywall — budget for patching. Second, if a hood is going in, have the hood on site before template. Hood dimensions drive the panel dimensions, and a hood that arrives different from the spec sheet after the stone is cut is an expensive problem.

Where It Is Worth It — and Where to Save Your Money

Not every wall deserves stone. After hundreds of these installs, here is our honest allocation guidance.

Highest return on the spend

  • Behind the range, floor to ceiling or hood. This is the focal point of the room, it is the surface that gets the most abuse, and a continuous non-porous panel here is genuinely functional as well as beautiful. If you only do one, do this one.

  • Fireplace surrounds. Enormous visual impact, no plumbing or electrical conflicts, and it reads as architecture rather than decoration. A remnant from your kitchen slab tying the two rooms together is one of the best-value moves in a whole-home project.

  • Powder room vanity walls. Small square footage, huge perceived luxury, and powder rooms are where you can be bold without living with it every day. Often achievable entirely from remnant.

  • Bar and beverage nooks. Compact, high-visibility, frequently photographed, and the water resistance is legitimately useful.

Where to think twice

  • Long runs behind sinks under windows. Awkward geometry, lots of cuts around window trim, and much of it ends up hidden behind a faucet and dish rack.

  • Full-height in a small galley with dense upper cabinets. If only 15 inches of stone is visible between counter and cabinet, you are paying feature-wall prices for a strip. A 4- or 6-inch splash plus paint often looks better and costs a fraction.

  • Busy patterned stone across a large field. At 40+ square feet, high-contrast dramatic movement can dominate the room and date quickly. Stand back 15 feet from the slab at the yard and imagine it four times larger.

  • Laundry rooms and mudrooms. Excellent candidates for porcelain tile or solid surface instead. Save the stone budget for rooms guests see.

Resale in the Portland market

Kitchen and bath updates continue to be among the strongest-returning renovations in the Portland metro, and stone surfaces read as permanent quality to buyers in a way tile does not. That said, the return comes from the kitchen feeling cohesive and current — not from maximizing stone square footage. A well-executed range wall in a kitchen with good cabinets and lighting outperforms stone on every wall in a kitchen with dated cabinetry. Spend in order: layout, cabinets, counters, range wall, then everything else.
