Before we split by material, five rules apply to literally every countertop surface we install.
1. Warm water and a pH-neutral cleaner. That is the daily routine. A soft cloth or non-scratch sponge, a few drops of dish soap in warm water, wipe, then dry with a clean towel. That is 95% of countertop care. Purpose-made stone cleaners are excellent and worth the ten dollars, but soapy water is not a compromise — it is the professional answer.
2. Nothing acidic, nothing alkaline, nothing abrasive. This rules out more products than people expect: vinegar, lemon juice, bleach, ammonia, glass cleaner, most bathroom and tub scrubs, oven cleaner, degreasers, and the majority of "all-purpose" sprays. Read the label; if it advertises that it cuts grease, dissolves soap scum, or disinfects aggressively, keep it away from the counter.
3. Blot spills, do not smear them. Press a paper towel straight down and lift. Wiping in circles drags the pigment across a wider area and, on porous stone, works it deeper.
4. Use a cutting board. Always. Not to protect the stone — granite and quartzite will destroy your knife long before your knife marks them — but because cutting directly on the surface dulls the polish over years and leaves fine metal marks that look like scratches.
5. Use trivets for anything off the stove or out of the oven. This one matters far more than most homeowners realize, and the reason is different for each material. On quartz, direct heat can permanently scorch or discolor the resin binder. On natural stone, the risk is thermal shock — a 450°F pan dropped on a cold slab, especially near a seam or a sink cutout, can crack it. A $6 trivet prevents a four-figure repair.
One Pacific Northwest note: our long wet season means standing water sits around undermount sinks and along backsplash joints for months at a time. Wipe the sink perimeter dry at the end of the day. That single habit prevents most of the caulk mildew and cabinet-edge swelling we come back to fix.

Natural stone is porous to varying degrees, and that porosity is the whole conversation. Sealing does not create a plastic shield on top of the stone — a good impregnating sealer soaks into the surface pores and makes them repel liquid long enough for you to wipe a spill up before it soaks in. It buys you time, not immunity.
Do you actually need to seal?
Run the water test. Pour a small puddle of water on the counter, in an inconspicuous spot, and leave it for fifteen minutes. Wipe it up and look at the stone.
If the stone underneath darkened noticeably, it is absorbing and wants sealing. If it looks unchanged, your seal is fine and adding more accomplishes nothing except leaving a hazy residue you will then have to strip. Do this test once or twice a year and let the stone tell you, rather than sealing on a calendar.
Realistic intervals vary enormously by stone. Dense dark granites like Absolute Black may genuinely never need it. Light, coarse-grained granites and softer quartzites may want it every 12 to 24 months. Some very dense quartzites are effectively non-absorbent out of the gate. Ask what your specific slab needs — any fabricator worth hiring knows the answer for the stone they just cut for you.
How to seal (it takes twenty minutes)
Clean the counter and let it dry fully — overnight is ideal, since trapped moisture blocks the sealer. Apply an impregnating stone sealer evenly with a cloth. Let it dwell the time the label specifies, usually 5 to 15 minutes. Then wipe off all the excess thoroughly before it dries. Excess sealer left to cure is the number one DIY sealing mistake and it leaves a streaky film that needs a solvent to remove. Avoid heavy use for 24 hours.
Stain rescue on natural stone
Identify the stain type, then poultice. For an oil-based stain (cooking oil, butter, grease), mix baking soda and water into a peanut-butter-thick paste. For an organic stain (coffee, tea, wine, fruit), use a paste of the same consistency made with 12% hydrogen peroxide instead of water. Spread it about a quarter inch thick over the stain, cover with plastic wrap taped at the edges, and leave it 24 to 48 hours. As the poultice dries it pulls the stain up out of the stone. Scrape off, rinse, dry, repeat if needed. This works remarkably well, and it is what we would do.

Engineered quartz — Caesarstone, Silestone, Cambria, MSI Q, Vicostone and the rest — is roughly 90% ground natural quartz bound with polymer resin and pigment. It is non-porous. That means it never needs sealing, will not absorb a red wine spill, and is the most forgiving material in most Portland kitchens. It is also the material we see damaged most often, precisely because people assume it is bulletproof.
Do: soapy water daily. For dried-on gunk, a plastic putty knife or your fingernail lifts it without harming the surface. For stubborn residue, a non-abrasive cleaner and a little patience.
Do not: use bleach or ammonia-based cleaners. Repeated exposure breaks down the resin and produces a permanently dull, slightly chalky patch that cannot be polished out the way natural stone can. Do not use abrasive pads or powders. Do not put a hot pan directly on it — quartz resin begins to suffer somewhere around 300°F, well below the temperature of a cast iron skillet.
Sun and white quartz: extended direct UV can yellow some white and light quartz over years. In practice this is a real but slow effect and mostly matters for a counter in a bright south-facing window or, more seriously, an outdoor application — which is why we do not recommend quartz outdoors at all. If you have an unusually sunny kitchen, mention it when choosing material; some brands hold up notably better than others.
Stain rescue: because quartz does not absorb, what looks like a stain is almost always a film sitting on top. A 50/50 paste of baking soda and water, spread and left for a few minutes, then rinsed, lifts most of it. For ink, permanent marker, or adhesive residue, a small amount of isopropyl alcohol on a cloth is safe. Never a scouring pad.



Marble, Soapstone, and Porcelain: The Special Cases
Marble. Marble is calcium carbonate, which means acid does not stain it — acid chemically dissolves it. That dull ring under a wine glass or the cloudy spot where lemon juice sat is an etch: microscopic surface damage, not a discoloration. No cleaner will remove it because there is nothing sitting there to remove. Light etching on polished marble can often be buffed out with a marble polishing powder; deeper etching needs professional refinishing. Prevention is the entire game: keep citrus, vinegar, wine, tomato, and cleaning acids off the surface, and use a tray under oils and condiments. If that sounds exhausting, a honed finish is far more forgiving because it has no mirror polish to disturb — and many people simply decide to let marble patina, which is a legitimate choice that has been made for a few thousand years.
Soapstone. Genuinely non-porous and completely immune to acid — you can set a lemon on it forever. It is soft, though, so it scratches and dents with use. Most owners embrace that, and mineral oil applied every few weeks early on darkens the stone to a deep charcoal and blends minor scratches in. Oiling is cosmetic, not protective; skip it and the stone lightens and patinas unevenly, which some people prefer.
Large-format porcelain. The toughest surface we install. Non-porous, UV-stable, heat-resistant, and acid-proof. Care is soapy water; that is the whole routine. The vulnerability is not the face but the edges and corners — a hard impact on an exposed corner can chip it, and porcelain chips are harder to make disappear than stone chips because the color often does not run through the full body. Treat corners with respect and porcelain will outlast everything else in the room.
Sintered stone (Dekton, Neolith and similar). Effectively porcelain’s tougher cousin. Same care, same corner caution.

A Simple Schedule You Will Actually Follow
Forget elaborate maintenance plans. Here is the whole thing.
Every day: wipe with warm soapy water or a stone cleaner, then dry. Blot spills as they happen. Dry the area around the sink before bed.
Every week: a slightly more thorough wipe-down including the backsplash joint and the sink rim. Check the caulk line where counter meets backsplash for any gap or discoloration.
Every few months: look at your counters in raking light — stand at one end with a low light source and sight down the surface. This reveals dulling, film buildup, and early etching that you cannot see straight-on. Inspect the seams and the sink clips underneath if you can reach them.
Twice a year: run the fifteen-minute water test on natural stone. Seal only if it darkens.
When something goes wrong: call before you experiment. We have talked homeowners out of aggressive scrubbing that would have turned a fixable film into permanent damage more times than we can count, and the phone call is free. If it is a chip, save the piece — a chip repaired with its own fragment is nearly invisible, and one filled with color-matched epoxy is a distant second best.
