  • Direct-vent gas units. These have their own hot glass surface and often specify a non-combustible zone extending well above the appliance. Read the manual for the actual model, not the model the previous owner had.

  • Televisions above fireplaces. Extremely common request in Portland remodels. A stone chase helps with heat and with mounting, but the appliance manual and the TV manufacturer both have opinions about ambient temperature. Plan the recess and the wire chase before the stone goes on, not after.

Refacing an Existing Brick or Tile Fireplace With Stone

Most Portland fireplace projects are not new construction — they are a homeowner staring at brick from 1974 and wondering what the options are. There are three real paths, and the right one depends on depth, structure, and budget.

Option 1: Clad directly over the existing masonry
This is usually the best answer. Existing brick is structurally sound, non-combustible, and already attached to the house. Thin large-format porcelain (6mm–12mm) can be set directly over brick once the surface is made flat, typically by skim-coating or by adding a thin cement-board plane. Advantages: no demolition, no dust event in your living room, no discovery of surprises inside the chase, and minimal added depth. Limitation: you inherit the existing footprint and the existing hearth height. If the old raised hearth is the thing you hate, cladding will not fix it.

Option 2: Demolish and rebuild the face
Removing the brick face and raised hearth gives you a clean slate: flush hearth, new proportions, recessed TV cavity, integrated lighting, and the ability to run stone to the ceiling. It is also the expensive, messy path. Budget for containment, disposal (masonry is heavy and dump fees are real), potential framing work, and the near-certainty of drywall repair on adjacent walls. Expect to add $1,500–$4,500 over the stone cost. When a homeowner wants a modern flush-hearth look in a 1970s house, this is the only way to get there.

Option 3: Build a new chase around the existing structure
Frame a new, larger box around or in front of the old masonry, sheath in cement board, and clad in stone. This is how you get a dramatic full-height feature wall with integrated niches, floating shelves, or a linear gas insert without touching the original chimney. It consumes floor depth — commonly 4 to 10 inches — so it works better in larger rooms.

What we look for on the site visit
Four things determine feasibility. First, is the wall plumb? Pre-1960 Portland homes in Alberta, Sellwood, Laurelhurst, and St. Johns are frequently out by half an inch or more over four feet, and a rigid panel will telegraph that immediately. Second, what is the firebox and is it still rated? Cladding a decommissioned or damaged firebox is a wasted investment. Third, where is the hearth line? Raised hearths drive the entire layout. Fourth, what is the ceiling height and access path? A 10-foot panel has to physically get through your front door, around a corner, and up over furniture — and that constraint has killed more full-height designs than budget ever has.

Layout, Seams, and the Details That Separate Custom From Kit

Two fireplaces can use the identical slab and cost the same, and one looks like a designer specified it while the other looks like a big-box installation. The difference is entirely in layout and detailing decisions made before anything is cut.

Slab selection and vein direction
A fireplace is a vertical composition viewed from eye level at a distance of ten feet, which is the opposite of how you experience a countertop. Dramatic diagonal veining that would fight a kitchen island can be spectacular running vertically up a chimney chase. We photograph your actual slabs, lay the pieces out digitally on those photographs, and show you where each vein will land before a saw touches the stone. On a natural material, this is the whole game.

Bookmatching
Consecutive slabs cut from the same block can be mirrored to create a symmetrical butterfly pattern centered on the fireplace. It is the most striking thing you can do with stone. It also requires that the yard still has sequential slabs from the same block, that the seam falls exactly on center, and that the pattern is planned around the firebox opening rather than interrupted by it. Bookmatching is decided at the slab yard, not in the shop.

Mitered edges
Thin porcelain and 2cm stone can be mitered at hearth edges, mantel shelves, and outside corners so the material reads as a solid 2-inch or 3-inch block. This single detail is the most reliable visual upgrade in the entire project, and it is what makes a 12mm panel look like a monolith instead of a veneer.

Seam placement
If a horizontal seam is unavoidable, it should be deliberate: aligned with the top of the firebox opening, tucked behind a mantel shelf, or placed at a reveal. A seam floating randomly at 51 inches is a mistake; the same seam at the mantel line is a design line. Full-height porcelain panels often eliminate the question entirely, which is one of their strongest arguments.

Finish selection
Polished stone reflects firelight and room lighting and reads formal and glossy. Honed and matte finishes absorb light, hide soot and fingerprints far better, and are the dominant choice in current Portland projects. Leathered and textured finishes add depth on dark materials and are excellent at hiding minor imperfections in older walls. In a room with large windows — and Pacific Northwest rooms often have flat gray daylight for months — a matte finish tends to look richer than a polish.

Lighting and integration
Plan for it before the stone goes up. Grazing light from above emphasizes veining and texture dramatically. Integrated toe-kick lighting under a floating hearth makes stone appear to hover. Recessed niches, floating stone shelves, and hidden wire chases all have to be framed before cladding. Every one of these is inexpensive during framing and effectively impossible afterward.
